Problems with, and queries about, Maintenance Mode

Hello,
I have decided to redesign one of my sites (changing it from Virtue to Ascend) and so have put in on maintenance mode (used the Seed Prod Coming Soon and Maintenance Mode plugin). I’m obviously doing something wrong as it comes up as maintenance mode on my computer but my wife’s computer still goes directly to the website (not the maintenance mode?. Any suggestions?
One questions I have about this is how long should I keep it in maintenance mode. I read on the plugin’s site that google warns against using maintenance mode fr a long time – apparently it ‘can eventually be seen as a sign that the server is now permanently unavailable and can result in us removing URLs from Google’s index’. It will probably take me a couple of weeks to redesign. Would that be a problem?
