Product Category menu

Hello-
I’m trying to use the product category menu. In the menu it has the category but it also shows the description -which is too wordy for the menu topper – I can’t seem to find how not to show that on the menu.
I’m a newbie – I’d like to have a page for the different categories to describe and show those products – Is using the build in category menu tabs the best way or would it be better to create pages with a description and then add the pictures for within those categories?
