Product Excerpt not picking up "read more tag"

Hi team, I want my products to show in a single column, with the product excerpt limited to a certain amount of characters. I have tried to achieve this by adding the ‘read more tag’ in the excerpt text, but when viewing the shop page, the entire excerpt still shows up…. I want the excerpt to be limited so that it looks nicer/neater in the product page but then the excerpt should show in full on the product page. Can you please advise how I can achieve this? I wanted to attach a screenshot but unable to do so.
