Search Bar on Home Widget Area

Hi,
I have been trying to adjust, and style the width of my search bar which I placed within the Home Widget Area.
I have tried using:
.form-search{
width: 700px;
}
it works if I were to make the search bar smaller. However it does not exceed 200px. Please advice me on this.
If it is a limitation, maybe you can advice me on a suitable plugin. Thanks!
