Show captions for featured images

Hi,
Is there a way to make the captions appear for all featured images (posts and portfolio images)? I am just trying to add a one line photo credit to a few of them, and it would be ideal if it could show up underneath the featured image and in the lightbox. I see that there is a way to add to the shortcode of a gallery to make these captions show up there, but since there is no code for featured images, I wasn’t sure what to do.
