TEL working but not SMS in topbar icon menu

Ben and I briefly discussed this very briefly awhile back, but now the rubber is meeting the road for my purposes. I’m using the Ascend theme and have placed 4 icons in the mobile topbar. One is the phone icon which uses the TEL link to generate a phone call and works beautifully. The other is a cell phone icon which uses the SMS link to generate a text message but is doing nothing. I’m very confused by what seems like an inconsistency to me, but my uncanny grasp of the obvious leads me to believe that these two things must work differently under the covers.

I actually have more and more clients wanting to make use of this feature. I’ve had no issues embedding it in the footer, using the Misc tab of Virtue, but this is the first time I’ve tried this approach. As always, I appreciate any help you can provide.
