Theme broken when update is available

The site was not displaying the theme this morning and when I logged in, I saw that an update to the Virtue Theme was available. The theme indicated “active” but it was clearly not working. I updated the theme and the site showed up properly again. Is this what will happen every time the theme gets updated? I never got an email letting me know an update was either coming soon – or available. Please tell me how to avoid this problem with the next update.
