Yoast sitemap error

I get the following error when I go to my Yoast generated sitemap…
This page contains the following errors:
error on line 1 at column 7: XML declaration allowed only at the start of the document
Yoast info said to deactivate all plug-ins as something is causing a whitespace to be added to the start of document (and all my webpages as well). Deactivating plug-ins did not correct it. I have also updated the theme to the latest version but still no change. Do you have any other ideas as to what I should look into to fix it??
