    Hi guys,

    I am building a pure blog with Pinnacle, and was hoping you could give me a little advice on the menu structure. Let’s say I am blogging on clean tech, and have the following categories. Should I create all of these topics as categories, using parent categories, or would it be better to stick with the main categories, and use tags for the sub-categories.

    I would like our readers to be able to click on “solar”, and see every post on that topic; or click on “energy” and see every post on all the energy topics. I don’t want it to get too complicated — we’re doing 5 or so posts a day, and want the site to work well at-a-glance.

    Thanks!

    Energy
    – Solar
    – Wind
    – Advanced Nuclear
    – Batteries
    – Grid

    Transportation
    – Cars
    – Trains
    – Bikes

    Buildings
    – Heating
    – Cooling
    – Lighting

    Hey,

    1. Yes you have to add your own link if your using a custom excerpt. (it’s custom so thats part of giving you control).

    2. There is a blog page format for posts. See here: http://themes.kadencethemes.com/virtue-premium/blog/

    You can also use a blog grid see here: http://themes.kadencethemes.com/virtue-premium/blog-grid-three-column/

    ^ That is where the custom excerpt would show as is. So whatever formatting you use for custom will show in either of those formats.

    There is also a separate style option which we added for the home page. That is what you see as “latest posts” in the theme options > home layout. That purely optional. Think of it as an added bonus. You don’t have to use it if you don’t like but it’s there. If you don’t like how it styles the posts then don’t use it.

    Finally you also can display the full post. see here: http://themes.kadencethemes.com/virtue-premium/blog-full/

    So to be clear thats three options.. Blog standard, blog grid, blog full and then apart and more custom from those the latest posts that you see in your home layout options.

    Any one of those styles can be called into a page using a shortcode.

    So since you want use the read more option where you manually tell wordpress where to break in the post by using the read more tag, you need to use the blog full. That style calls for content and not excerpt.

    Here is an example of how we are using the full output in conjunction with the read more tag: https://www.kadencewp.com/blog/

    You can see there that all the formatting is in each post (including an image) till I’ve added the read more tag.

    It sounds like that is the style you want throughout your site (even on the home page).

    So you need to go into your blog page, make sure you have selected the blog page template and set the “display content as” to be full. See here: http://docs.kadencethemes.com/virtue/#blogpage

    Then you need to go into the theme options > home layout. Deactivate “latest posts” and instead move “home widget area” into the enabled area.

    Next go to your apperance > widgets add a text widget to the home widget area and place [kad_blog orderby=date items=4 fullpost="true"] into the text area.

    Hi,

    I’m using a featured projects grid in a footer widget. Is there a way to change the order to random (or menu order) rather than by date? I see the ability to choose a category in the Virtue: Post Grid: widget, but I don’t see an order setting.

    Thanks,
    -MikeS

    PS. Here’s the site:

    Is this for the archive grid or single product page?

    What other font?

    What size?

    Please post a link with support requests.

    Hey,
    So the grid widget is only designed for sidebars or footers. It’s set up to output small thumbnails.

    You can use a shortcode if you would like to add portfolio posts in a page. For example: [portfolio_posts columns="5" items="10"]

    In order for the sliders to show up on the portfolio grid page, the slider needs to be active within each post, with your desired images placed within them.

    Go into the “portfolio post options” for the desire post, and make sure that you’ve selected “image slider” for your “project summary.

    Then scroll even further down the page, and find “portfolio slider images.” Ad the images you want to appear in the slider, and you should be done.

    Hope that helps!

    I choose blog-grid for my posts. But there is only possibility to choose how many word will be in excerpt. It’s not good for me because blocks with excerpts have different sizes (because of different lengths of words). Is there any option to have grid blocks with the same size? If it could count letters instead of words it would be better but it could cut the word at the and. I was seeking some plugins but all I’ve checked have the same situation.

    but why when i used in my second domain it caused errors ?

    Hey Annika,
    You should see a Testimonials tab in your admin panel. You can create testimonial posts there, then to create a testimonial page create a new page and set the page template to Testimonial Grid. This template will automatically pull the posts to the page.
    If you have further questions regarding this please start a new thread and post a link to your site as this one has already been marked as resolved.

    Hey,
    The shortcode is not supposed to effect the home portfolio full settings.

    It it supposed to create it’s own grid.

    You would have to change the js to effect the shortcode and one line in the shortcode. For the JS

    change this line: $('#portfoliowrapper-home').isotopeb({ filter: '.photobooths' });

    to this:
    $('#portfoliowrapper-homeshortcode').isotopeb({ filter: '.photobooths' });

    Then in your shortocode change from this:
    [portfolio_posts columns="4" items="50"]

    to this:

    [portfolio_posts columns="4" items="50" id="homeshortcode"]

    Hi Ben,

    I added the code as you instructed, but I am still getting two columns of grid-type blog posts.

    Please see here: http://Worldin360.com

    Just for reference, I am looking to have the blog feed appear as a thumbnail feature image on the left with a title and 28 character excerpt to the right.

    Cheers, thanks for taking the time to resolve this.

    Hi,
    On this site… akrasprint.com, I’m having problems with the sidebar shrinking and looking bad on mobile. When I add the css @media (min-width: 992px) It fixes it, but then makes other css code not function properly. For example, in my woocommerce shop page, I have hidden the price for products, and when I add the @media (min-width: 992px) code the price will appear again when viewing the site in mobile version.

    So essentially the @media (min-width: 992px) code fixes the sidebar mobile problem, but creates another problem with the pricing being shown on my store.

    Do you know what I’m missing? Here is all my custom css.. thanks.

    Hi JM,
    Can you post a link so I can better understand how you have things set up?
    From your portfolio post edit page you can set the Portfolio Options to Image Grid then add your gallery images to the Portfolio Slider Images tab.That will give it this look- http://themes.kadencethemes.com/virtue-premium/portfolio/work-space/
    Also see this tutorial- https://www.kadencewp.com/creating-a-portfolio-page-with-virtue/

    Hi Ben,
    Sorry, no that didn’t work. I want the info in the staff grid to display like it does on the staff page/post. With the person’s title (ex. President and CEO) larger/bolder and on a separate line than the bio text.

    Does that help?

    It would actually be nice to have the photo click through to the full bio as well. If that is possible…

    Thanks!

    Hi Ben and thanks,

    I ran into a couple issues, mainly;
    1. The Posts appeared as a GRID, whereas I would like for them to be listed as they were before with a profile photo on the left and an excerpt with 28 characters adjacent to the right
    2. All categories appear, but I would only like for the category “Article” to appear

    Note: I saw in another post that using the shortcode permits for a sticky + categorized posts in chronological order. I just wanted to confirm that is the case and that the sticky (also categorized as “Article”) will appear first and then all posts in the category “Article”.

    PROCESS of how I did it (and I can send you login info if you would like):
    1. Create page “Home”
    2. insert shortcode [blog_posts items=”8″]
    3. Reading Settings > Static Page > “Home”
    4. Theme Options > Home Layout
    REMOVED “Latest Blog Posts” (so I only have “Image Menu”)
    Note: When I did this the area where the posts are supposed to be disappeared completely. So,
    5. Theme Options > Home Layout
    ADDED “Page Content”

    The result is:
    1. a grid style Posts area (I would like feature photo + 28 characters excerpt)
    2. All posts including ones I would not like to have appear (I would like only “Article” category)

    Thank you Ben!

    #77663

    Hey,
    For a portfolio post in the portfolio grid you can disable the link and make the lightbox icon larger is that what your wanting?

    Ben

    #77610

    1. Add this css to the theme options > advanced settings:

    .home .sliderclass, .home .contentclass {
        padding-bottom: 0;
    }
    footer#containerfooter {
        padding-top: 0;
        position: relative;
    }
    #containerfooter .virtue_social_widget a {
        background: transparent;
        color: black;
    }
    .footercredits {
        position: absolute;
        right: 20px;
        bottom: 0;
        padding-bottom: 0;
    }

    #containerfooter .virtue_social_widget {
        padding-bottom: 10px;
    }

    2. In your settings > reading. Make sure no page is selected as your “posts page” just leave that area blank. Don’t select a page.
    Then in your blog page use the “blog grid” page template and save.

    3. Do you mean the logo tagline?
    4. You can add this css:

    header#kad-banner {
        border-bottom: 1px solid #eee;
    }
    .wrap.contentclass {
        padding-top: 20px;
    }
    .sliderclass {
        margin-top: 0;
    }

    I’m confused as to why you would want those url to load on the blog grid? Are you thinking that a lot of people use this browser extension and your wanting to support that?

    I personally don’t think adding loading time and adjusting html is worth it for a browser extension. But to do it you would either have to make your images load really large by overriding the template through a child theme or make your template load the url as a link for the image (adding confusion for users who want to click the image to see the post). with this option you are still going to have to override the templates through a child theme…

    You can get a child theme here: https://www.kadencewp.com/child-themes/
